Medical Adhesives and Sealants are vastly used to make surgical tapes and are applied around wounded skin to promote healing and protection

Medical adhesives and sealants market

Medical adhesives and sealants were originally developed to help surgeons perform open heart surgery. This type of sealant was called a 'hemoscope' by surgeons and later became known as the 'castor' since it was initially made from castor leaves. Castor oil is still the most commonly used medical sealant for surgeries. The other types of sealants include the 'sterile adhesives', 'anti-inflammatory' and the 'antibacterial'. This article will discuss the differences between these various types of sealants.

Other medical adhesives and sealants are a type of adhesive that are used to close wound holes. They are very similar to the type of adhesive that can be used to re-stick plaster on a wall, or put mortar down a concrete sidewalk. For instance, in September 2021, a major medical adhesives and sealants making company in Germany, Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, revealed that the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) has recognized its Loctite Liofol solution, a non-solvent adhesive system, for recyclability and flexible packaging solutions. These specialized sealants do not stick to the surface they are supposed to cover; instead, they adhere to the tissue. It is usually the skin or blood vessels that suffer damage from these medical sealants, and the only way they can be removed is with a surgical knife.

Some of the most popular medical adhesives and sealants are those made from plastics. While the cost of these is typically higher than other types of adhesives, they are strong and durable, and offer a wide range of applications. However, plastic adhesives don't offer the pliability that other types of adhesives do, and therefore are less likely to be able to withstand the normal wear and tear that is part of medical devices.

Finally, there are dissolvable adhesive products used in medical devices that don't require constant attention. For instance, dissolvable adhesive tapes are often used in medical devices to hold metal pieces together. These tapes are often made out of a conductive material such as glass or polyester, and are used in medical instruments such as catheters, insulin pumps, and cameras. While dissolvable adhesive tapes do not have the tackiness of other types of adhesive, they do provide a level of pliability that allows the pieces to bond without the risk of damaging the device.
