Ostomy care involves the removal of diseased portions of the gastrointestinal or urinary system. In ostomy, an artificial opening is created in the abdomen to allow for the elimination of body wastes. The pouch is made of soft absorbent material that has a hole in it through which wastes can be passed. In ostomy surgery, the normal passage of bowel contents from the lower body are transferred to the upper body. Making an ostomy simply means bringing a portion of your intestine through the abdomen wall so that fecal waste passes through the abdominal cavity rather than passing through the urinary tract.
Ostomy finds application in treatment and management of various gastrointestinal diseases. The incidence of Crohn's disease amounts up to 6.6 per 100,000 people in Germany, while the prevalence is 100 to 200/100,000 people. Such high prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases boosts demand for ostomy care. The advantages of using ostomy are numerous and they include easy mobility and relief from many discomforts of bowel and urinary tract disorders. With ostomy care, you can freely move your bowels and urinary opening to wherever you want. You no longer have to worry about the awkward position of a fixed rigid opening in your abdomen. You can easily go through bowel movements as per the wish without being strained by the heavy muscles.
Ostomy care also helps the patient in developing an overall body image that he or she has always dreamt of. It develops self-confidence in such patients because the patient knows that they do not need to change their lifestyle in order to feel better. They can continue with their favorite habits without even bothering about the way other people are reacting to them. In this way, the patient is able to maintain self-esteem and build up her self-image.
