1T-MONOS; Flash Memory Technology, Used In Places Where Flash Cannot Be Used

1T-MONOS Market

1T-MONOS, or one transistor metal oxide nitride oxide silicon (flash memory technology), is used as a solution for applications where flash has not been embedded before. It is a technology that is included in memory expansion cards all those used in consumer electronics devices, as well as the 'go to' storage medium for most embedded systems. 1T-MONOS helps keep process costs as low as possible and provide a way to add flash to automotive analog and power devices. It can also be embedded in a wide range of base processes and achieve the high temperature reliability required in automotive applications.

Thus, there is an increasing demand for 1T-MONOS across the global automotive industry. In automotive, it can be used to cater variety of purposes, in conjunction with BiCDMOS (Bipolar CMOS) and the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor), such as to enhance P/E (program/erase) endurance and optimize its power consumption. Yet, flash memory technology continues to evolve, with particular emphasis on the on chip aspect. Moreover, as per Renesas results, it will bring better performance and reliability to devices aimed at automotive sector.

Furthermore, 1T-MONOS may help reduce the number of chips used in motor control systems, making them lightweight, compact, and power efficient. Flash memory is a long-life and non-volatile storage chip that is widely used in embedded systems. It can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. Automotive embedded devices now use flash media extensively in their design. Today, the main flash memory used in vehicles follows a Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (Jedec) standard called e-MMC, short for embedded Multi-Media Controller.

Thus, with the rapid growth of the automotive industry, demand for flash memory technology (1T-MONOS) is also increasing, worldwide. Germany is one of the leading automotive market in Europe, in production and sales terms. For example, in Europe, Germany was the largest automobile manufacturing country in 2019, with approximately 4.7 million passenger cars and over 500,000 commercial vehicles produced. This in turn is expected to increase the demand for flash memory technology in this region.
