Medical grade hydrogel is basically a very soft, spongy, absorbent material used for the purpose of improving a healthy wound, lessening scarring, and offering increased moisture to wounds. Its main benefit is its capacity to closely resemble natural human skin tissue. Unlike other topical treatments and gels, medical grade hydrogel does not cause any kind of allergic reaction, irritation. In fact, it has even been approved by the U.S.FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as safe and effective. For instance, in September 2021, a biopharmaceutical company in the U.S., UroGen Pharma Ltd., revealed the result of its two clinical trials on bladder cancer reporting that the hydrogel-based formulation was effective in treating the patients suffering from NMIBC (non-muscle invasive bladder cancer).
Among the launched products, one of the major concerns was the use of medical grade hydrogel in cosmetics. There was a significant increase in the sales of these products, particularly those containing alcohol. There is no provision for regulating the content of alcohol in cosmetics.
This is alarming for two reasons. The first reason is that the presence of alcohols in cosmetics increases a patient’s chances of a reaction when applied on the skin; which can include burns, redness and inflammation. However, not all countries have been equally careful when it comes to the quality and safety of this amazing substance.
There is hope for the future as there is a movement to have regulations passed that will allow the FDA to intervene more actively in the medical grade hydrogel clearances. The FDA has the power to fine manufacturers who do not comply with the current market standards. They can also order producers to cease production if they have not complied. If the current trends continue, then drug-makers could see a dramatic decrease in the amount of foreign manufactured products available in the global market in the next few years.
