Weight loss or anti-obesity medicine is a pharmacological drug that controls or reduces weight by affecting the central nervous system. These medicines modify one of the most fundamental processes of our body, weight regulation, by regulating either calorie intake or appetite. Since these medicines are designed to regulate appetite they may also enhance nutrient absorption and thereby enhance weight loss. There are many products available on the market that can help to lose weight effectively. These products include dietary supplements, food products that increase metabolism, and exercise products such as belts, watches, and gloves. As per the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), around 1 in 10 people is obese in Italy.
The effects of weight loss diet products on health can vary immensely depending on the active ingredients contained within the product. The two most common active ingredients in weight-loss supplements are thermogenic herbs and laxative herbs. Thermogenic herbs include hoodia Gordonii, green tea, and licorice which all speed up the metabolic rate. They also have the added effect of stimulating the nervous system. Most of these products have the same effects as diet products. Most weight loss diet products contain a blend of powerful nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and herbs that will help to lose weight. However, most products also contain other ingredients that are designed to make the products more effective.
Another common ingredient in weight loss diet products is stimulants similar to ephedra. One type of stimulant, synephrine, has been found to cause serious side effects in lab rats and in some users. Synephrine was banned in the U.S. due to the discovery that it was responsible for at least six deaths. There have been other instances of serious side effects caused by Synephrine. Recently, in June 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a drug named semaglutide to help in weight loss among overweight and obese adults.
