A urine collection bag is a small clear plastic container that is placed directly on top of the bladder. The urine collection bag provides a way to collect the waste while the doctor is conducting his or her evaluation. In the past, doctors used large drainage bags (thick and large enough to hold a quart of urine) and transported these bags to the lab in plastic containers. Nowadays, doctors often use smaller-sized urine collection bags which are either attached to a leg bag or carried in a backpack. Urine collection bags help collect urine while the doctor is conducting his or her evaluation. The collected sample can then be given to the lab for analysis.
A catheter tube is a narrow, tapered plastic tube (a catheter) that is inserted into a person's body through a small incision in the body. The catheter tube is lined with skin (not mucous) so that the sample of urine that is collected can be studied close up. A urinary catheter tube is made up of two different pieces - a catheter tube spring and a cannula, which is a thin, flexible plastic stick that is inserted into the tube to make it fit inside of the body without being forced open.
Urine collection bags are available in two types - body-worn collection bags and disposable collection bags. Body-worn collection bags are very convenient as they are usually equipped with an integrated Velcro strap which facilitates the easy and quick removal of the contents. The attached Velcro strap is designed in such a way that it provides additional comfort and is also convenient for storing the collection bag. On the other hand, disposable collection bags are very easy to use as patient needs to urinate and throw away the empty contents after every bowel movement. Moreover, these body-worn collection bags can be worn comfortably around the waist and legs.
