An exhaust gas recirculation valve is a device that recirculates part of the exhaust gas back to the combustion area (from the inlet) of the engine. This method is mainly aimed at decreasing the harmful emissions of nitrous oxide (HO2) being emitted during the exhaust process. The purpose of the exhaust gas recirculation valve is to decrease the size of the carbon monoxide (CO) particles that are produced during the exhaust process. The flow of exhaust gases through the exhaust gas recirculation valve is also increased, hence increasing the pressure and increasing the flow of exhaust gas.
It is advisable to use an exhaust gas recirculation valve with a vacuum source. An exhaust gas recirculation valve works by having the air passing through a small tube or hole, where it is compressed and pushed by the vacuum source. The air pressure created by the vacuum is what compresses the air and sends it back to the inlet of the engine. The exhaust gas recirculation valve is designed to open when the air pressure reaches the preset limit. The purpose is to prevent the escape of toxic gasses from the engine by ensuring the right amount of air pressure is maintained. When the users go for an exhaust gas recirculation valve to be fitted, the valve is usually placed near the firewall near the exhaust port.
For the exhaust gas recirculation valve, users will require two separate components. One of them is the temperature sensor or TDS, which is used to measure the temperature of the exhaust gas being recirculated. The other component is the nitrogen oxide sensor or NOX, which measures the amount of nitrogen oxide being expelled. They have to ensure that both the sensors are working properly, in order for the system to work properly.
Another function of the exhaust gas recirculation valve is to provide safety to the engine of the vehicle. The first function of the exhaust gas recirculation valve is to close down the fuel flow. So users should ensure that the system is working properly before they try to add any fuel to it. If they do not close it properly, they might end up with more harmful emissions than the one they have installed. It might also lead to dangerous situations such as engine knocking down because of too much fuel that was released.
In the case of a manual function, the exhaust gas recirculation valve allows the user to open and close the exhaust port, depending upon the level of fuel contamination. Usually, the mechanic only needs to open the top, letting in clean air, and removing excess dirt and deposits. However, if there are any leaks in the manifold or problems are being experienced, the user should open and close the valve accordingly. The mechanic might also be able to fix the problem if he inspects the exhaust ports carefully.
The exhaust gas recirculation valve system usually operates efficiently when the temperature is optimal. However, there are times when the engine shuts down when the temperature goes below freezing point. This problem can be rectified by the addition of a small amount of water to the engine. Although this will reduce nitrogen oxide emission, it does not affect the functioning of the exhaust gas recirculation valve system itself.
